  • Are looking for a credit card limit between $500 - $4,000 to have some flex with your money.
  • Can pay off your credit card balance each month, to get up to 55 days interest free on purchases.

  • Need to make secure payments while travelling or want to buy online and avoid foreign currency conversion charges.
  • Want to start building a credit history.

You'll need your employer and income details, an overview of living expenses (like rent and food costs), detail on any debt (like student loans) and any savings or investments (like KiwiSaver).

Tips for managing credit

  • Avoid withdrawing cash or transferring money from your credit card as you'll pay interest on this from the day you get the cash out.
  • Use ASB Card Control to set-up a transaction limit, turn off ATM withdrawals or lock your card if you lose it.
  • Keep an eye on your spending with Spend Tracker. It automatically puts your transactions into categories like shopping or entertainment.
  • Set-up an alert for when your credit card statement payment is due.

How does the 55-day interest free period work?

You can get up to 55-days interest-free from the start of your statement period. How does this work? All you need to do is make sure you pay the full balance (total amount due) on your credit card statement by the due date. If you're not able to, interest will be calculated on the daily balance and charged on your next statement. This means you'll be adding more to your balance on top of the amount you already owe. Nobody wants that! So, avoid interest by paying your full balance every month.

Questions you may have

How can I get a credit card?

You can apply for ASB's low-interest credit cards online or in person at your local branch. We'll assess your application to ensure you have consistent income, good credit history, and provide the appropriate credit card limit for your needs. We may ask for supporting documents to back up your information. If approved, your credit card will be automatically posted to your address and arrive within 5 to 7 working days. Learn how to apply for a low-interest-rate credit card here.

How does credit card interest work?

If you purchase goods or services with your credit card and don't pay the full amount of your statement closing balance by the due date, you'll be charged interest on the outstanding balance.

ASB offers an up to 55 days interest free period beginning from the start of your statement period. This means that you'll have up to 55 interest free days for purchases of goods and services, provided you have paid off the entire balance of the previous billing cycle.

If you make cash advances, such as withdrawing cash from your credit card at an ATM or transferring money from your credit card account to another account, you'll be charged daily interest at the cash advance rate from the day of the cash advance. We will also charge interest on dishonoured payments, which are failed direct debits, at the purchase interest rate.

You can pay the balance owing each month through direct debit from your bank account. Learn more about how interest rates, interest-free periods, and credit card debt work here.

How long does it take to get a credit card?

We will review your credit card application and be in touch with next steps within two business days. Once approved, your credit card will be automatically posted to your address and arrive within 5 to 7 working days.

How much does it cost to have a credit card?

Your card fees can include the annual fee and interest rate on purchases and cash advances. Cards with a higher credit limit and rewards often have a higher annual account fee and interest rate. Our ASB Visa Flex card is ideal if you want a credit card with less interest and no annual fee. As with all ASB cards, we offer up to 55-days interest-free period on eligible purchases. Compare our credit card options here.

How old do I have to be to get a credit card?

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a credit card. If you are considering your first credit card, then ASB Visa Flex could be a suitable option with no upfront fees, our lowest interest rates, and a low credit limit.

How can I add a credit card to my phone?

You can add your card details to your mobile phone or smartwatch through Apple Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay, or Garmin Pay. Learn how to store cards for contactless payments on our mobile payments page.

How do I apply for a credit card?

You can start the credit card application process online through the ASB Mobile Banking app or FastNet Classic internet banking. You can also apply for a credit card in-person at one of our many branches nationwide; find the closest ASB branch near you here.

What is the CVC code on my credit card?

The CVC (card verification code) is the three-digit code on the signature panel of the back of your credit card. It is a security feature that helps protect your card from fraudulent transactions on online purchases.

What is the best credit card for me?

ASB Visa Flex is designed for those looking for a credit card with our lowest interest rate on purchases and cash advances. It has a lower credit limit, no annual account fee, no Offshore Service Margin on foreign currency transactions, and no other fees. As with all ASB cards, it includes up to 55 days interest-free on purchases. If you are looking for cards with a higher credit limit or rewards, you can compare all of our available credit cards here.

What is an Offshore Service Margin?

An Offshore Service Margin is charged by us when you make a transaction in a currency other than New Zealand Dollars.

Overseas transactions will either first be converted into US dollars and then into New Zealand dollars or converted directly at an exchange rate selected by Visa or ASB (as the case may be) from available wholesale rates (or, if applicable, the Government mandated rate).

There are no Offshore Service Margins charged on the ASB Visa Flex card, for other ASB Visa cards we charge Offshore Service Margins of 2.10% of the converted New Zealand dollar amount for overseas transactions.

What is a credit history?

Having a clear credit history is essential for getting finance. It's essentially a list of all the places you've had debt with, and how good you are at paying it off. Check out our guide for more information. Make sure you keep up to date with payments and clear any outstanding debts.

How can I avoid surcharges on my credit card?

You may encounter a small surcharge when paying at a store using a credit card or contactless debit card. This is because payment processors charge retailers extra for using these payment methods. You can avoid surcharges by inserting or swiping your debit card or paying with cash instead.
