ASB applies your payment to the transactions that might attract a higher interest rate before those on a lower interest rate - this helps reduce the interest you pay. Purchases and cash advances (other than Smart Rate purchases for ASB Visa Light) are paid before balance transfers and Smart Rate purchases. If you have multiple balance transfers and/or Smart Rate purchases, we pay off the ones with the highest interest rate first. If they have the same interest rate, balance transfers are paid before Smart Rate purchases.
Yes, you will need to pay the minimum payment due at the end of each month. This will reduce the Smart Rate purchase amount owing, it is not an interest charge.
After your Smart Rate period ends, any outstanding balance will incur interest at the standard ASB Visa Light purchase interest rate. If you pay off your credit card balance in full (less any current Smart Rate purchases and/or balance transfers) every month, there will be no purchase interest charged.

Open a new ASB Visa Flex or ASB Visa Light credit card account between 2 November and 13 December 2026 and get $100 cashback.
To be eligible, you must open a new ASB Visa Flex or ASB Visa Light credit card account between 2 November and 13 December 2026 and make five purchase transactions of any value within the first 30 days of opening the account.
Eligible purchases do not include interests and fees, reversals and refunds, cash advances or transactions that ASB treats as quasi-cash advances, including gambling transactions, topping up funds on rechargeable gift cards or prepaid cards, purchasing cryptocurrency and securities, or purchasing foreign currency.
