Perks of the package

No base or transaction fees for two years

Make the most of the Job starter’s package fee and rate savings with no transaction or base fees for the two years you're on the account.

Apply for an ASB Visa credit card, if you need it

You could apply for a Visa Light with no account fee ever or a Visa Rewards with no account fee in your first year.

Buy online using your own money with a Visa Debit

A Visa Debit uses your own money instead of credit, but otherwise works just like a credit card. You can use it for payWave and online shopping, and with an ASB Job starter’s package you pay no Visa Debit card fees for two years.

Exclusive Job starter’s personal loan rates

You could get a special rate personal loan for the full term of your loan.

Is it right for me?

Welcome to the next exciting chapter in your life.

After the two years, we’ll move you onto a Streamline account with standard rates and fees.

Questions job starters might have

  • Can I switch to a Job starter's account from my current bank?

Moving banks might seem a bit overwhelming but it's never been simpler to switch to ASB. When you apply for your Job starter's account, you’ll get a dedicated Personal Switcher who’ll manage everything for you.

  • Do I need to prove I’ve started a job?

No. You just need to be between the ages of 18-20 and have your pay credited to your new Job starter's account. If you’re studying at a college or university, or you’re in an apprenticeship, our Tertiary student package is for you.

If you have a Tertiary account but haven’t had a chance to show us your proof of study, we’ll move you to a Job starter's account after a year. We’ll let you know before this happens.

  • How long will I have this account for, and what happens then?

You'll have the Job starter's account and all its benefits for two years. We'll then switch you to a Streamline account. It happens automatically, so you don't need to do anything. We'll let you know before we make the change.

  • What's an overdraft and how can I get one?

An overdraft is a loan with an agreed limit that you can use any time and pay off at your own pace, as long as you keep within its agreed limit. To find out more about overdrafts, how to get one and how to manage them, visit our Overdrafts page.

  • Which Visa card do most job starters get? How can I get one?

You can choose from three of our Visa cards.

The most popular credit card with Job starter's customers is the ASB Visa Light. It’s a great choice, with a low interest rate on purchases, no account fee ever, and a special smart rate purchase feature as well.

If you want to earn True Rewards on your spending, go for an ASB Visa Rewards. Every dollar you spend earns you True Rewards Dollars, which you can spend at our partner stores.

Not keen on credit cards? Use your own money to make purchases online or with payWave, with an ASB Visa Debit card

You can also explore other credit card options for job starters.

  • What's the difference between the Job starter's, Tertiary and Graduate packages?

The ASB Job starter's package is specially designed for 18-20 year olds who are planning to go straight into the workforce after school or have already started working. The ASB Tertiary student package is for students who are studying at a New Zealand tertiary institution or completing their apprenticeship. The ASB Graduate package is designed to give anyone who’s just finished their tertiary studies or apprenticeship a helping hand in their next chapter - starting work.

  • How do I set up automatic payments on my Job starter's account?

Starting work usually means starting to pay board, rent and bills as well. It's easy to set up automatic payments in the ASB Mobile Banking app or in FastNet Classic internet banking. They're free to set up, and you can have as many as you like.
