Questions Graduates might have

  • I’m a new customer. How easy is it to switch from my current bank?

Switching bank accounts might seem a bit overwhelming but it’s never been more simple to switch to ASB! Once you apply for your chosen account, you’ll get a dedicated Personal Switcher who’ll manage everything for you.

  • Do I need to have graduated from a university and how long after this am I eligible for the Graduate account?

To be eligible for the Graduate account you either need to have graduated from an NZ tertiary institution or have completed your apprenticeship. You can open a Graduate account any time up to two years after you graduate or complete your apprenticeship.

  • How do I provide proof of graduation or apprentice completion?

Graduates, you’ll need a copy of your qualification (Degree/Diploma) i.e. Certificate or official transcript of academic record or written confirmation from your tertiary institution confirming you have successfully completed your qualification.

Qualified apprentices, you’ll need proof of trade registration or written confirmation from your employer, ITO or tertiary institution confirming successful completion of your apprenticeship.

Existing customers, if you’ve been on an ASB Tertiary account for 3 years or more, you’ll get automatically moved to a Graduate account unless you’re still studying and want to renew your Tertiary account.

  • What’s an Overdraft and how can I get one?

An overdraft is a loan, with an agreed limit that you can use any time, and pay off at your own pace provided that you always keep it within its agreed limit. To find out more about overdrafts, how you could get one and how to manage it, visit our Overdrafts page.

  • What happens to my interest-free overdraft after 2 years of being on the Graduate account?

Once you’ve been on the Graduate account for 2 years, you will automatically be transferred to a Streamline account and your overdraft will incur interest at our standard unsecured overdraft interest rate. To find out more about overdrafts and costs that may be associated with them, visit our Overdrafts page. See our rates and fees.

  • What Visa card do most Graduates get and how can I get one?

You can choose from three of our Visa cards.

The most popular credit card with our other Graduate customers is ASB Visa Light. It’s a great choice, with a low interest rate on purchases, no account fee ever, and a special smart rate purchase feature as well.

If you want to earn True Rewards from your spending, you can go for an ASB Visa Rewards. Every dollar you spend earns you True Rewards Dollars, which you can spend at our partner stores.

Not keen on credit cards? Use your own money to make purchases online or with payWave, with an ASB Visa Debit card

You can also explore other credit card options.

  • What's the difference between the Graduate, Tertiary and Job starter packages?

The ASB Tertiary package is for students who are currently studying at any NZ tertiary institution or completing their apprenticeship. The ASB Job starter's package is specially designed for 18-20 year olds who are planning to go straight into the workforce after school, or have already started working. The ASB Graduate package is designed to give anyone who's just finished their studies or apprenticeship a helping hand in their next chapter - starting work.

  • How can I complete automatic payments on my Graduate account and are there costs?

Now that you’ve graduated, you might be starting to pay bills - you can do this easily by setting up automatic payments in the ASB mobile app or FastNet Classic and it’s free! Find out how to set up automatic payments.
