In 1906, after many years of lobbying the government, a Special Bill was passed enabling excess funds to be directed to community projects. Since that time ASB has been recognised and respected for the support it gives to the communities in which we operate.

Community partnership

St John

ASB and St John have been working together since 2008, with our staff volunteering to help St John on Area Committees, as Caring Callers, and with fundraising.

All ASB branches are equipped with an AED (Automatic Heart Defibrillator) and have AED-trained staff ready to help.

ASB also supports ASB St John In Schools. This is a basic first aid programme, which Kiwi teaches kids essential life-saving skills and gives them confidence to take action in an emergency.

Coastguard NZ

We live in a country surrounded by ocean, so it’s great to know our community partner Coastguard NZ are dedicated to saving lives at sea. They provide marine search and rescue services to New Zealand 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year and rely heavily on donations and community support to keep operating.

ASB supports Coastguard Auckland’s ASB Rescue Vessel and the annual MayDay Appeal.

Starship Foundation makes miracles happen every day

ASB is proud to have been a Five Star Sponsor of the Starship Foundation since its inception in 1991. As one of the country’s most recognised hospitals, Starship treats more than 120,000 young patient visits each year from across New Zealand.

ASB has funded a BERAphone that allows Starship to offer their New Born Hearing Screening Service to all births in the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) catchment area. ASB also fundraised for two ASB Starship Mobile Ear Clinics, and is committed to projects that support patients and their families.

Ronald McDonald House

ASB has been working with Ronald McDonald House in Auckland and Wellington since 2008. Our support goes a long way and has included funding the Grafton Mews family kitchen in Auckland, and the community room in Wellington.

In addition, ASB staff volunteer their time at the houses, cooking thousands of plates of food each year for families’ dinners.

ASB GetWise - financial literacy for kids

We know that good habits start at an early age. That's why we’re committed to making sure the next generation learn about managing their money with ASB GetWise. It’s an educational programme in primary and intermediate schools and it’s part of our wider commitment to the Kiwi community. The programme is fun and interactive for kids and delivered by independently trained facilitators working with students in the school classroom. And the best part? ASB GetWise is free to any primary or intermediate school, all they have to do is register.

ASB believes the younger we can help kids learn to save, the better off they’ll be in the future. Our School Banking programme aims to do just that. Any schools that bank with ASB can register for the programme, and receive all the information and equipment they’ll need for their students to save money every week. Students will see their savings build up in their very own Headstart account, helping keep them enthusiastic and motivated to continue saving.

Auckland Lantern Festival

As Auckland’s population continues to grow so too do the diverse ethnicities and cultures of the people that call Auckland home. ASB understands the importance of celebrating and embracing cultural diversity and is proud to be Principal Sponsor of the Auckland Lantern Festival.

This free annual event marks the end of the celebrations of the Chinese New Year and brings together individuals and families from all walks of life to enjoy the beautiful lantern displays as well as many arts, crafts and food stalls.

NZ Falcons

Diversity plays a key part in making our community a better place to live and work.

As an employer and an organisation that supports the community, ASB is working towards making a difference by participating in the Rainbow Tick Programme and signing on as Principal Sponsor of the NZ Falcons.

Corporate responsibility

ASB's Corporate Responsibility Report talks about ASB, our values and the work we are doing to build and support sustainable New Zealand communities. A passion for helping to develop sustainable business is not something new to ASB. It's part of our culture. We want to share the work we are doing in this area, the challenges we face, the progress we have made and our goals for the future. It's a journey. We don't have it all sorted, but we are working every day on making ASB a better and more sustainable company, and helping our customers and community partners to do the same.
