By helping with community and charity projects, ASB is involved with making New Zealand a better place.
In 1906, after many years of lobbying the government, a Special Bill was passed enabling excess funds to be directed to community projects. Since that time ASB has been recognised and respected for the support it gives to the communities in which we operate.
ASB and St John have been working together since 2008, with ASB staff volunteering to help St John on Area Committees, as Caring Callers, and with fundraising. All ASB branches are equipped with an AED (Automatic Heart Defibrillator) and have AED-trained staff ready to help. ASB also supports ASB St John in Schools, a first aid programme which teaches Kiwi kids essential life-saving skills and gives them confidence to take action in an emergency. Through this programme ASB distributes over 10,000 first aid kits a year to primary school kids around the country.
Starship Children's Health is a dedicated paediatric healthcare service and major teaching centre, providing family-centred care to children and young people throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific. For over 25 years, ASB has helped raise $3.2m to pay for medical equipment, research and new technology. More recently, ASB and ASB customers have contributed $1 million for the refurbishment of the Children's Emergency Department.
ASB has been working with Ronald McDonald House Charities in Auckland and Wellington since 2008. ASB has provided funding for the Grafton Mews family kitchen in Auckland, and the community room in Wellington. In addition, ASB staff volunteer their time at the houses, cooking thousands of plates of food each year for families' dinners.
The Springboard Trust's vision is to dramatically improve the life skills of young New Zealanders through enhancing school leadership capability. The Strategic Leadership for Principals' Programme (SLPP) is a 10-month, free programme that leverages cross-sector expertise to provide strategic leadership development and support for New Zealand principals. ASB was the first Strategic Partner of the Trust and over the years has provided many senior business leaders from within the business to support the programme as mentors and subject matter experts. Over the last 5years, together we have been able to work with over 224 principals in five regions through the SLPP and Alumni programmes, impacting over 75,000 students.
ASB has been the major sponsor of the ASB Classic, New Zealands premier tennis event, since 1997. The ASB Classic is part of the Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) and the men's Association of Tennis Professionals' (ATP) tours and is played in early January each year at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland.
In recent years, some of the world's most iconic tennis players have headlined the ASB Classic. Superstars such as Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki have wowed crowds in the first week of the tournament, while Juan Martín del Potro, Jack Sock, David Ferrer and John Isner have entertained in the second week of the tournament.
The ASB Auckland Marathon is one of Auckland's most iconic road races, with around 15,000 runners taking part in five events: full marathon, half marathon, 12km Traverse, 5km Challenge and Kids Marathon. All the events take in the beauty of Auckland's harbour bridge, pass ASB headquarters at North Wharf, and finish in nearby Victoria Park. The event annually raises over $1 million dollars for charities.

In 2014 we became the Major Sponsor of the New Zealand Falcons who are New Zealand's only gay and inclusive rugby union team. ASB Polyfest is a vibrant four-day, family-friendly festival that celebrates traditional Polynesian culture through song, dance and speech. Held annually in March in Manukau, secondary school students from across the wider Auckland region perform and compete on stages representing Maori, Cook Islands, Niuean, Samoan and Tongan cultures. Other cultures showcase their performances on the Diversity Stage. The festival is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the world with upwards of 9,000 student performers from more than 70 schools, and almost 90,000 spectators.
ASB has been naming rights partner of ASB Polyfest for more than 30 years. Our support has enabled the festival to grow from its small beginnings - four schools competing at a host school to the spectacular multi-day event it is today.
The annual New Zealand Art Show in Wellington is the largest curated art sale of its kind in New Zealand. Bringing together New Zealand's vibrant scene of artists, the New Zealand Art Show caters to all art enthusiasts, from art collectors to beginners and provides the opportunity to view a variety of art styles, genres and mediums. All artwork displayed across the three day event is for sale at affordable prices.
More than 10,000 people experience the show annually and around 3000 pieces of original New Zealand art are on display and for sale. At least 85% of the sale price goes directly to the artist and the Trust has given back to the art world over $1million since its inception in 2004.
ASB GetWise, New Zealand's largest youth financial literacy programme delivered free to primary and intermediate students, teaches basic money management skills including establishing good savings habits at an early age.
While ASB GetWise facilitators are based in New Zealand's main centres Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch, 'roadshows' take ASB GetWise further afield visiting schools throughout the country. ASB GetWise has reached 69% of targeted primary and intermediate schools in New Zealand, delivering more than 28,000 workshops to more than 1,500 schools and 700,000 registered students.
In 2016 ASB announced its principal sponsorship of ASB Bright Sparks, an annual tech-education programme that seeks to foster innovation and professional development in Kiwi kids. The purpose-built ASB Waterfront Theatre sits next door to ASB's head office in Auckland's Wynyard Quarter and signifies a major milestone in New Zealand theatre history. The Theatre Royal Charitable Foundation and ASB provide the ASB Performing Arts Community Grant to lower the costs for community groups to hire the theatre's two performance spaces. Providing a subsidy, the ASB Performing Arts Community Grant enables community groups to hire the theatre to showcase their performances in a world-class facility, helping grow performing arts in the Canterbury region.
ASB Theatre Marlborough is one of New Zealand's newest theatre venues. Opened in 2016, the contemporary, state-of-the-art theatre boasts a 700-seat auditorium perfect for live performances, theatrical events, conferences, functions or exhibitions.
Eden Park is regarded as New Zealand's largest and most iconic national sports stadium. Every year over half a million local and international sports fans enjoy matches and functions at the Park.
