How do I create a strong password?
Having strong, regularly updated passwords is an important part of staying safe online. Remember that your online banking password protects your money and your information. It’s important to make sure it’s strong and secure, by using these tips.
Make it long - At least eight characters, but ideally ten or more. The longer it is, the harder it will be to crack.
Choose passphrases over passwords - Simple and unique sequences can easily be compromised by attackers. A good way to create a strong password is to use a phrase, and mix it up with numbers and special characters. They're usually longer, but also easier to remember. For example:
- Best: rdTr1ppinwMYfva77ies (Road tripping with my favourite allies)
- Better: EenyMeenyM1nyM0 (Eeny Meeny Miny Mo)
- Basic: un1c0rn38
Keep it private - It's up to you to keep your password safe, so don't share it with anyone. If you do need to write it down, keep it in a secure location. For example, you may choose to save your passwords in a reputable password keeper application.
Make it unique - Don’t use your banking password for other online accounts. Keep it unique. In fact it’s a good idea to have different passwords for different online services such as your social media, email and work accounts.
Keep it current - Changing your password regularly is another good safety tool. You can change your FastNet Classic internet banking password at any time, under your Profile. We even give you an indication of your password’s strength. If you ever forget it, or lock yourself out, you can also set a new password on the ASB Mobile Banking app anytime, anywhere.
Remember: A strong password is easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess.
