How do I create a strong password?

Last Updated: 25 Nov 2016

Having strong, regularly updated passwords is an important part of staying safe online. Remember that your online banking password protects your money. It’s important to make sure it’s strong and secure, by using these tips.

Never use very simple passwords - Avoid short, common passwords. Hackers are well aware of the most common passwords and can compromise them quickly and easily. Don’t use common words or names, unless they’re part of a longer pass phrase.

Pass phrases are stronger than passwords - Rather than using a single word with some numbers, it’s a good idea to consider using a phrase instead. They’re usually longer, so they’re harder to crack – and they’re often easier to remember, too. Adding numbers and punctuation makes them even harder to crack.

Unique passwords - Don’t use your banking password for other online accounts. Keep it unique. In fact it’s a good idea to have different passwords for your different online services.

Regular updates - Changing your password regularly is another good safety tool. You can change your FastNet Classic password at any time, under “My Settings”. We even give you an indication of your password’s strength. If you ever forget it, or lock yourself out, you can also set a new password on the ASB Mobile Banking app anytime, anywhere.
