Daily Alert: US shutdown poised to end but job worries cap equity rally
- The US Senate vote to reopen the US government passes, with the bill likely to pass into law over the next few days, which will end the longest US government shutdown in history (Since Oct 1 – 42 days and counting)
- US bond markets were closed for the Veterans Day Holiday, but bond futures rallied and the USD fell on reports that firms are cutting jobs. Reports that China will fast track rare earth exports except for companies with ties to the US military also dampened the earlier US shutdown equity euphoria
- Strong Australian consumer sentiment data and warnings over inflation by RBA Deputy Governor Hauser provided a lift to Australian yields. RBNZ Q4 Inflation Expectations was little changed despite 3% Q3 NZ headline inflation and the 50bp OCR cut in October. This provides a green light to a RBNZ cut in November
