ASB Good as Gold is an ASB initiative recognising, rewarding and helping wonderful people in our community.
Andrew Porteous is a 33 year old husband and father of two young children. Sadly, two weeks after the birth of his second child, and one week before he was due to start a new job, Andrew was diagnosed with Stage Four Oesophageal cancer.
Untreated, the doctors have said an average person with his type of cancer only has 6 months to live and treated, just 12 months. Andrew, with the love of his friends and family, has the self-belief and determination to beat this. Andrew and his family are self-funding Herceptin to try and fight this and spend as much time as they can together.
His ASB nominator had this to say about Andrew:
“The remarkable thing about Andrew is that he was always willing to help, even going out of his way and taking ownership of something for anyone who needed it, regardless of whether they were friends or not.
He has a strong ethical compass, has always been physically fit. He has always just been one of those guys that tries to make life easier for other people in whatever way he can.“
Andrew and his family need some help and a bit of magic. To make life a little bit easier this Christmas, we’ve given them $10,000 to help out in this challenging time. If you want to help as well, visit Give a Little.
