ASB Good as Gold is an ASB initiative recognising, rewarding and helping wonderful people in our community. We ask the public to nominate people who are making a real difference in their community, have grabbed hold of life against the odds or who really deserve help in a time of hardship. The recipients are featured on TV One’s Seven Sharp programme.

Balclutha vet Rob Mills is well known in the Otago community. Not only is he a local vet, he is also active in the school, Scouts, his church and participates in other local events. Sadly, Rob lost his wife Louise to cancer in April this year and since then has been the mum and the dad for his 4 kids who are aged between 10 and 17. Being a busy vet with many after-hours callouts, and an active member in the community - on top of his increased family commitments, Rob needed a boost.

We heard from his nominator Annie that he and Louise had planned to travel to Africa with their children to do volunteer work before she was diagnosed with cancer. So we are giving Rob $10,000 to help him to bring his and Louise’s dream alive to take the whole family overseas to volunteer in Africa.

Watch the video to see us surprise Rob and his family with the Seven Sharp team.
