More ways to pay for public transport

From November 2024, ASB Visa cardholders will be able to use PayWave on their ASB Visa Debit or Credit cards, or digital wallets, to board Auckland buses, trains, and most ferries*.

Using Your ASB card for Auckland public transport

From November 2024, you can use your ASB Visa card to tag on and off Auckland public transport, excluding Fullers Waiheke commercial ferries. Charges for all trips made in a day will appear as a single transaction in your bank account within two days.

Ensure you use either the same physical card or a digital wallet throughout the day to receive the best daily fare cap. Remember to take your card out of your wallet or bag to avoid accidental charges from other cards. For detailed trip costs, you must check MyATHOP or contact Auckland Transport.

How does it work?

  • Tagging on and off: Always tag on and off with the same card or device throughout the day to avoid being charged the maximum fare.
  • Card Handling: Take your card out of your wallet/purse/bag to tap on the reader to prevent accidental charges from other cards, or other non-bank cards getting picked up by the reader.
  • Daily fare calculation: All fares for one day will be calculated and charged as a single transaction in your bank account within two days. AT will ensure you receive the best overall fare for the day, depending on your travel.
  • Concessions: PayWave is suitable for standard adult fares only. If you have a concession (e.g., student, Supergold, weekly or monthly passes), please continue using your AT HOP card or continue to purchase your passes as you do currently.
  • Payment failures: If a payment fails, your card will be declined for future journeys until the outstanding amount is paid, not just when you have money back in your account again. If a payment for a days’ travel has been declined and you try to board again with the same card with money in your account, AT will try and recover that money at the time of tagging on. However, if they are successful, you won’t be able to board again with the same card for 15-30 minutes. If you don’t board again, AT will try and recover the funds over the coming days and if they are successful, you can board again. You can also contact AT or log in to MyATHOP to pay the money back. ASB cannot arrange to pay this money back for you.
  • Card declines: Your card will be declined for standard reasons, such as expiration, being reported lost or stolen, fraudulent activity, faulty payWave functionality, or if a previous payment failed and you haven’t paid AT back.
