What's a bank doing at the zoo?

Long before this was a jungle adventure, there was an unforgettable elephant. Fifty-four years ago, Kashin arrived in Aotearoa with support from ASB, beginning a special connection with Auckland Zoo.

Four‑year‑old Kashin arrives at Auckland Zoo, capturing attention from day one. ASB helps fund her move and care – and even gets the honour of naming her.

After a long search for the right companion, Burma arrives. The pair live trunk-by-trunk for decades.

Kashin paints, appears on TV, and becomes affectionately known as the ASB elephant. She even takes on a role as an arthritis ambassador.

Kashin passes away, and more than 18,000 people gather to say goodbye.  For many Kiwi families, she wasn’t just an elephant – she was part of growing up.

ASB returns to Auckland Zoo to celebrate 150 years of helping kids learn about money. Same place, new memories, and a small part of Kashin’s legacy carried forward.
