We're giving back some of your merchant service fees
Effective 1 December 2020, eligible small business and commercial customers will receive a 20% rebate on their ASB merchant service fees. The rebate will be backdated to the statement period beginning 1 December 2020. If you are eligible, we will be in touch with you directly to provide further details. The rebate will be in place until merchant service fee regulations come into effect.
We've introduced a maximum merchant service fee for Visa and Mastercard debit contactless transactions of 0.70%, with the aim of making contactless acceptance available and affordable.
This applies to debit cards that are issued from a New Zealand issuer and excludes UnionPay debit cards, which will be charged at the same rate as all other transactions.
The new capped rate applies from 1 August 2020 onwards and is automatically applied to eligible small business merchants.

See which of our three merchant service fee pricing options best suit your business needs.
With Interchange Plus, you’re charged the actual interchange fee applicable for each transaction, plus a fixed rate merchant service fee.
Interchange Plus pricing provides a direct pass through of the interchange costs that the card issuers charge the acquiring bank for each transaction.
Note: For the latest domestic interchange rates please visit the Visa and Mastercard websites.
Similar transactions are grouped together, with each group having its own fixed rate merchant service fee.
Semi-bundled pricing may be beneficial depending on the card and transaction types your customers use. For example, the contactless domestic debit or standard credit card transactions have lower interchange fees than international card transactions.
A single fixed rate is applied to all your Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay transactions.
With fixed rate pricing, you have certainty of a set rate across all transactions regardless of the varying card types, or how transactions are processed.
