Important information about Card Control

Situations where ASB Card Control settings may not apply

What transactions will always be approved regardless of any setting that I have applied with ASB Card Control?

There are a few scenarios where a setting will not be applied to a transaction.
Regardless of a setting that you've applied to your card with ASB Card Control, we will not decline the following:

  • Recurring transactions set up on your card (e.g. direct debits).
  • Transactions made over the phone, or a mail order purchase (unless a temporary lock has been applied).
  • Transactions made at an ASB branch (apart from an ASB ATM), ASB phone banking, online or mobile banking (including transfers from your card to other accounts) and bill payments.
  • Transactions processed when there is a system interruption (unless a temporary lock has been applied).
  • Transactions that we reasonably consider should be allowed for your convenience.

Are there any exceptions to the settings I apply with ASB Card Control?

In some exceptional situations, a transaction may still be approved, even if a feature has been turned off with ASB Card Control.

We rely on merchants/financial institutions to provide us with specific information about transactions that they process, which allows us to determine whether it matches any settings you may have applied to your card. If they supply us with incorrect information, then a transaction may still go through, even if you've changed your settings. For example: If you turn off “in store international transactions” using ASB Card Control, but the merchant incorrectly processes it as an “online transaction”, the transaction will still go through.

Some transactions are not sent to ASB immediately for authorisation, in these situations it is important to know that your settings may not apply. For example: Some merchants process contactless transactions offline, which means we will be unable to stop Visa payWave transactions from being accepted, even if you have turned off that feature.

We rely on computer and telecommunication systems. Disruptions to these systems may result in ASB Card Control settings being unavailable from time to time.

If I apply a temporary lock on my ASB Visa card with ASB Card Control, will every transaction be declined on that card?

All transactions will be declined on an ASB Visa card if a temporary lock has been applied, except for the situations outlined in the questions above.

About ASB Card Control

How can I use ASB Card Control?

Log into the ASB Mobile Banking app > Select 'Cards' from the menu > Choose a card to command > Pick a feature to control. If you cannot see the 'Cards' menu, check that you have downloaded the latest update for the ASB Mobile Banking app.

What cards can I command using ASB Card Control?

ASB Card Control can be used with any ASB Visa card.

If I turn a feature off with ASB Card Control, am I able to turn it back on again?

Yes. You can turn any of the available features on and off, whenever you like.

Updating features with ASB Card Control

If I turn a feature off on my card with ASB Card Control, will it affect any other cards accessing the same account?

No. The features of your ASB Visa card that you turn on and off, will only apply to the card where the control has been set. For example, if you turn off a feature your ASB Visa Debit Apple Pay, your ASB Visa Debit card will not be affected.

If I have dual access and access my transaction account from my credit card, and I turn a feature off on my card with ASB Card Control, will it only affect my credit card account?

No. If you turn a feature off on an ASB Visa card that has dual access, it will apply to all accounts that are accessible on that card. For example: If you temporarily lock your ASB Visa card with dual access, your card will not be able to be used for any transaction (including from a transactional or savings account linked to that card).

If I turn a feature on or off in ASB Card Control, how long will it take to update?

Your card settings will be updated immediately, in real time. You can turn a feature on or off whenever you like.

What happens if my settings don't update immediately?

Normally, your card settings will be updated immediately, in real time. However, ASB Card Control is reliant on computer and telecommunication systems. Disruptions to these systems may result in ASB Card Control settings not being updated immediately from time to time. Your settings will be updated as soon as the disruption is resolved.

What happens to pre-authorisations (for example at a petrol pump) if I have set a spending limit? These transactions may be declined if the amount is over the amount you set as a spending limit on your card.

What if I want to use a feature of my ASB Visa card, which I have turned off with ASB Card Control, but don't have access to the mobile banking app?

You can get in touch with us on 0800 803 804 (or on +64 9 306 3000 if overseas) or by coming into any ASB branch, to turn on any features that you have turned off with ASB Card Control.

Can I update an additional or joint cardholder's ASB Visa card?

No. You only have access to change the features of your own card. You are unable to change the settings of a joint or additional cardholder.

What if I lose my card and need a replacement?

If I lose my card, and I temporarily lock it using ASB Card Control, will a replacement card be sent to me?

No. You will need to call us on 0800 803 804 (or on +64 9 306 3000 if overseas) and we will cancel and replace your ASB Visa card. You can temporarily lock it with ASB Card Control, to ensure no one can use it, but you will still need to call us to cancel and replace your card.

If I get a replacement ASB Visa card, will my ASB Card Control settings still apply?

  • Any settings will continue to apply to a replacement card if the card number is identical.
  • Any settings will not continue to apply to a replacement card, if the card number is different.

If you get a new card, we encourage you to check your ASB Card Control settings.
