ASB has created a set of rugby ball payment terminals to follow the British & Irish Lions tour across New Zealand and raise money for the Starship Foundation, the official charity of the DHL New Zealand Lions Series 2017.

The balls are fitted with a Smartpay mobile EFTPOS terminal, so fans can tap their contactless- enabled credit and debit card or phone to make an automatic $3 donation to Starship.

ASB Donation Balls will be passed around the stadiums at each match to help raise money for the emergency department at Starship Children’s Hospital.

When a payment is received, the ball lights up and the screen flashes with a thank-you message.

ASB executive general manager marketing and communications Roger Beaumont says ASB is hoping the balls will raise $200,000 for Starship across the six-week series.

“We’re proud to have come up with this creative way to fundraise for Starship,” Mr Beaumont says.

“This is a really simple, cashless way to give, and we encourage fans to tap the balls while they are enjoying the match, and support Starship’s important work.”

Rush Digital chief technology officer Danushka Abeysuriya says the ASB Donation Ball provides rugby fans with a safe, quick and easy way to donate.

"Each ASB Donation Ball displays a running tally of the total money raised across the series to inspire people to give,” Mr Abeysuriya says.

Starship Foundation chief executive Brad Clark says Starship is proud to be chosen the official charity partner of the 2017 DHL New Zealand Lions Series.

“Every donation, big or small, will support our national children’s hospital.  All funds raised will support Starship’s Children’s Emergency Department, helping those in need of urgent medical care,” Mr Clark says.

ASB is a proud sponsor of the 2017 DHL New Zealand Lions series and has been an official partner of the Starship Foundation for 25 years.
