From overseas

From overseas

If you’re moving to New Zealand, you can apply for an ASB account before you leave your home country.

We can open an ASB account in your name, receive funds transfers to this account and have an ATM card and cheque book waiting for you when you arrive in New Zealand

We have experienced teams in New Zealand that provide ongoing banking support for people who have recently moved to our country. These migrant banking specialists also speak and understand Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese Hokkien, Hokchiew, Hakka, Teowchiew, Sichuan, Malay and Indonesian. We’ll give you a copy of their locations and contact details when you arrive.

If you’re applying from the United Kingdom or from Korea we have a different process in place from that below.

How to apply

There are three easy steps:

Step 1: Complete an application form

  • Simply download this application form.
  • Fill in all the relevant sections.
  • Read the checklist on the first page, which outlines the documents that are required and how to make certified copies.

Step 2: Send the form to us, with the necessary documents.

  • Either mail the completed form and documents to ASB Migrant Banking Division, PO Box 4294, Auckland, New Zealand.
  • Or bring them with you to one of our overseas representative offices.
  • Once our Auckland office has received all your completed documents it will usually takes two to three days to open your account.
  • You will be notified by fax, email or post (if preferred) of your ASB account number and that it has been opened.
  • You then supply a minimum account opening deposit of NZD 500 by an international money transfer, within one month.
  • After that, further money may be deposited electronically if you wish.
  • However, you will not be able to withdraw that money until you arrive in New Zealand and activate your account as described in step 3.

Step 3: Activate your account when you arrive in New Zealand

  • When you arrive, please contact ASB’s Migrant Banking Division.
  • We'll arrange to meet with you so that we can activate your account.
  • If it is a joint account, both account holders will need to be present in person.
  • You will then be able to fully transact on your account.
  • At this time, we'll also be able to review your banking needs to ensure you have the right accounts and services.
