The more you know, the better: how Vonto’s insights can help you do better business.

Temaki Food Truck

Passion, grit and intuition are all crucial when it comes to small business success. But so is a clear understanding of the state of your finances. Digital analytics tools like Vonto offer valuable insights into where your business is now, where it could be going, and what you might need to fix. Rodrigo Maia, co-owner of the Temakeria and Temaki Truck, tells us how it helps his business.

1. What do you do?

My partner Jenny and I started off with the Temaki Truck, which we would park up at events, festivals, functions, weddings and markets and sell our cone-shaped, hand-rolled sushi (it’s not sushi though!). We make our own sauces and pickled veggies, add meats, fish or crispy tofu and roll them up in rice around a crispy seaweed wrap. We opened our first restaurant - and New Zealand’s first Temakeria - at Eastridge Shopping Centre in Mission Bay in February 2019. Starting the business has given us the opportunity to bring Brazilian, Japanese and Korean influences to Aotearoa and we are really proud of what we have created.

2. Cashflow is king in business. How has Vonto helped you manage that and plan ahead?

I started using the app in 2019 and found it simple and easy to understand. Before COVID-19, I would look into the app daily to see how I was tracking with my revenue and operating expenses and because our business data was already in the app it helped us make smart decisions during the lockdown. We had some money saved up and we prioritised looking after our team and paying our suppliers once lockdown was announced. The cashflow insight is helpful as we can compare month on month or this time last year and this provided a buffer for immediate use of funds. We were fortunate that our landlord provided a rent reduction while all the eateries were closed, as well as providing a business consultant to help us get things moving again.

Being in hospitality, we had no income during the lockdown, so it was definitely hard, but I decided to take the time to look at strategies and opportunities to make our business better; the insights from Vonto really helped with this.

3. Time is money when you're running a business and admin can take up a lot of it. How much time does Vonto save you and what do you use that time to focus on instead?

Being a small business owner, we wear multiple hats. In our restaurant, Temakeria, we are the chef, server, cleaner, mechanic and accountant, so the less time we have to spend looking for information, the better. Vonto is great, when I open the app on my phone, all the insights that I need - from financial information to social media activity - are all there in one place and you can favorite the ones you want to see regularly. I use gross margin, operating expenses, cashflow and daily sales insights a lot.

Having all my business data synchronised into an app and providing easy to understand insights has allowed me to think about what I can do to scale up my business. We are now on a planning/designing stage to wholesale some of our best-selling items on the menu, to bring a piece of Temakeria into our customers’ homes, keep an eye out of these new releases in your nearest supermarket.

4. What are the biggest benefits of using Vonto? How has it helped you become a better business?

I have an accountant, but Vonto can simplify what my business data means in a quick and easy way and it’s accessible anytime, enabling better decisions. I know what my margins and running costs are and normally there is only about a 1-2% fluctuation, but I noticed a 4% increase with the month on month feature. I drilled down into the app and noticed that one of my suppliers had increased their price in the invoice. Without Vonto’s insights I most likely wouldn’t’ have found this until much later, so I was able to start making decisions and take action.

Vonto's Terms of Use and Privacy Collection Policy apply.
