This type of insurance provides a lump sum if you are totally and permanently disabled, and unable to work again.

The money from a Total Permanent Disablement claim could help in many ways. For example, it could repay loans, pay for house modifications, create an income-generating investment or cover health expenses.

Good reasons to get Total Permanent Disablement cover

  • Add on to Term Life or stand alone: Total Permanent Disablement cover may be included in an ASB Lifestyle Security Plan policy in one of two ways: Either as an early (accelerated) payment of the Term Life benefit; or as an additional (standalone) payment which does not reduce the Term Life benefit.
  • Your own or any occupation: Cover is available on an "own occupation" or "any occupation" basis.
  • Underwritten by Sovereign: You have the security of knowing that your policy is underwritten by Sovereign Assurance Company Limited, New Zealands leading life insurance provider.

Eligible occupationsSome hazardous occupations are uninsurable - to confirm eligibility please contact an ASB Insurance Manager. Own occupation benefit is available only for classes 1, 2, 3 and 4. 
Cover optionsLevel or inflation linked. If TPD is selected with Term Life as an accelerated benefit, indexation may apply.
Term of coverRenewable to age 65 or to age 70 (occupation classes 1 to 4). For ages over 65, activities of daily living definition will apply.

Definition of total permanent disablement


The term "total permanent disablement" refers to the end result of illness or accident. It means you:

  • Can't do your own job or another job which your skills may be suited to; or
  • Suffer loss of limbs or sight; or
  • Can't perform at least two of the following activities without the physical assistance of someone else: 
    • Bathing and showering
    • Dressing and undressing
    • Eating and drinking
    • Using a toilet
    • Moving from place to place by walking, in a wheelchair, or with a walking aid.


Total permanent disablement also applies if you are unable to perform one of the activities noted above and your intellectual capacity has reduced or deteriorated to such an extent that you require permanent and constant supervision.
